The Old Man and The Sea

chapter1 introduction

1.1 The introduction to The author

ernest hemingway, a famous writer both in america and The world, was born on july21, 1898, at oak park, illinois. during world warⅰhe worked as an ambulance driver in france and in italy infantry and was wounded severely before his 19th birthday. during The spanish civil war and The second world war, he served as a correspondent on The loyalist side. Then he settled in cuba in 1945. in 1954, hemingway was awarded The nobel prize of literature for his “mastery of The art of modern narration”. later, he was increasingly plagued by ill health and mental problems, and in july, 1961, he committed suicide by shooting himself.hemingway’s life seems like an unusual book which is filled with adventures. in The Old Man and Sea, The Old Man called santiago is actually The representative of The author.

1.2 The introduction to The novel

The novel The Old Man and Sea is based on a real story. The novel was first published in1952, with 100,000 copies being sOld and he was awarded The pulitzer prize in 1953 because of this novel.

1.3 The introduction to The background

hemingway’s life was adventurous and vivid but full of pains. having experienced The two world wars and suffered from The injuries, he was disappointed with The world at that time and became pessimistic about The future of huMan beings. influenced by The greedy and heedless way of life, and also as a spokesMan of “The lost generation”, hemingway’s works were vivid records for The life of those physically and mentally wounded sOldiers, illustrating Their loneliness and desperation. and in The Old Man and Sea, santiago, an Old fisherMan ventures into The gulf stream and hooks The biggest marlin that ever seen. Then he tries all his best to catch it all him alone with increasing exhaustion. he is compelled into a losing battle with sharks which leave him nothing but The skeleton of his marlin.

chapter2 plot and character

2.1 plot about The story

The Old Man and The Sea can be regarded as a heroic tragic novel. in The novel, The hero

is a broken fisherMan named santiago who truly tries his best to fight against his fate. in The story, santiago has not caught fish for 84 days, due to The fact that, Mandolin, a little boy, who used to sail with The Old Man, is forbidden from fishing with santiago by his parents who forced him to catch fish in anoTher “good-lucky” ship.

The Old Man insists on fishing alone, even though The boy asks for fishing tighter again. he goes into The deep Sea with few person have been to and at last, he succeeds in hooking a giant marlin which is eighteen-foot lon ……此处隐藏838个字……o its side and stab The marlin with a , ending The long battle between The Old Man and The tenacious fish. santiago straps The marlin to The side of his skiff and heads home, thinking about The high price The fish will bring him at The market and how Many people he will feed.

while he continues his journey back to The shore, sharks are attracted to The trail of blood left by The marlin in The water. The first, a great , santiago kills with his harpoon, losing that weapon in The process. he makes a new harpoon by strapping his knife to The end of anto help ward off The next line of sharks; in total, five sharks are slain and Many oThers are driven away. but The sharks keep coming, and by nightfall The sharks have almost devoured The marlin's entire carcass, leaving a skeleton consisting mostly of its backbone, its tail and its head. finally reaching The shore before dawn on The next day, santiago struggles on The way to his shack, carrying The heavy mast on his shoulder. once home, he slumps onto his bed and falls into a deep sleep.

a group of fishermen gaTher The next day around The boat where The fish's skeleton is still attached. one of The fishermen measures it to be 18 feet from nose to tail. tourists at The nearby café mistakenly take it for a shark. Manolin, worried during The Old Man's endeavor, cries upon finding him safe asleep. when The Old Man wakes, They promise to fish togeTher once again. upon his return to sleep, santiago dreams of his youth—of lions on an african beach.

i have read this novel for total 3 times——in secondary school, in high school and a month ago. i still remember that my chinese teacher used to ask us a profound question that at The end of The story,do you think The Old Man finally has won this fight. my answer is “yes.undoubtedly”. it seems that The Old Man failed to defend The whole marlin from The attack of sharks. however, we can obviously find that it is not a simple fight between The Old Man and The sharks or The marlin. it is a war between The Old Man and powerful nature , a war that santiago fights against his fate that The author actually wants to show us. and in this way, he is absolutely The right champion.

until now, The most impressive part i want to mention here is The journey when he was boating on The ocean. this part actually makes up The whole body of this inspiring story, meanwhile, The author draw us readers a plenty of vivid pictures showing us The amazing strength of The marlin, The fierce and cruel of sharks and finally admirable courage and will of santiago,an Old unlucky Man. he came to become a hero in The boy’s eyes, in The town, and deeply in his own heart.

what’s more, i consider santiago is also The ideal hero in author’s heart, and hemingway was also in strong desire of being himself a hero which would be able to enhance his confidence to conquer all kinds of difficulties he might be confronted with and prospect of developing his bright future.
